Supporting BeaverBots FTC at the World Championship in Houston, Texas was one of those moments for us.
What started as a group of students from different schools meeting at their coach Susee’s house turned into a robotics team that would go on to compete at the FIRST World Championship in Houston, Texas – one of the biggest STEM events in the world.

More Than Just a Robotics Team
What makes BeaverBots unique is how they work together.
There are no rigid titles or fixed responsibilities. Team members explore everything – from CAD and programming to outreach, strategy, and robot building. One day might involve designing a mechanical system, while the next could mean preparing engineering documentation or mentoring younger students at a STEM camp.
The team members come from different schools, but robotics brought them together with a shared goal: build something great together.
And that journey is anything but easy.
The Grind Behind the Competition
The FTC season begins every September, but qualifying for Worlds takes months of preparation.
After competing through qualification tournaments in December and January, BeaverBots earned their place at the World Championship during the state competition in February.
That was only the beginning.
From that moment on, the team entered an intense cycle of redesigns, testing, coding, rebuilding, and strategy sessions. There were overnight work sessions, constant robot iterations, and pressure to improve every small detail before stepping onto the world stage.
But for the team, that challenge became part of the excitement.
Walking Into Worlds
The scale of the FIRST World Championship is hard to describe until you experience it.
The event brought together:
Teams from 66 countries
More than 300 FTC teams
Nearly 1,000 robotics teams across all FIRST categories
Around 50,000 attendees
Everywhere they looked, students were testing robots, discussing engineering ideas, and representing months – sometimes years – of work.
For BeaverBots, Worlds was more than a competition. It was a chance to meet people from across the globe who shared the same passion for engineering and innovation.
Building a Robot That Could Compete With the Best
This year’s FTC challenge required robots to shoot balls into scoring gates, complete scoring patterns, and operate during both autonomous and driver-controlled gameplay.
Every match demanded precision, speed, and strategy.
BeaverBots designed their robot under strict FTC size limits of 18” x 18” x 18”, but inside that compact frame was an impressive amount of engineering:
Intake rollers for efficient collection
A 360-degree turret shooter
Adjustable rack-and-pinion shooting systems
Limelight sensor detection
Custom-built programming libraries
The team handled much of the manufacturing themselves using CNC machining, laser cutting, and 3D printing.
One of the boldest decisions came shortly before Worlds when they implemented a swerve drive system – an advanced drivetrain used by only a small number of FTC teams.
The upgrade gave the robot faster movement, better mobility, and improved field control. It also made BeaverBots stand out technically among top-tier teams.
Robotics Meets Real Life
What makes these students even more impressive is that robotics was only part of their lives.
Many team members were simultaneously preparing for AP exams while getting ready for Worlds. Some had major exams immediately after returning home from Houston.
That meant studying during flights, reviewing notes in hotel rooms, and balancing academics alongside competition pressure.
It is the kind of commitment that often goes unseen behind robotics competitions – but it says everything about the dedication these students bring to what they do.
A Moment to Remember
At Worlds, BeaverBots earned the 2nd Place THINK Award in their division.
The award recognizes excellence in:
Engineering design
Programming
Documentation
Outreach
Financial planning
Overall engineering process
To showcase their journey, the team displayed multiple versions of their robot at their pit booth, allowing judges and visitors to see how the design evolved over the season.
It was not just about the final robot. It was about the process, learning, and persistence behind it.
Inspiring the Next Generation
For BeaverBots, success is not only measured by trophies.
FTC places strong emphasis on outreach, and the team has actively worked to make STEM more accessible through:
STEM camps for children
Hands-on robotics programs
Their “Girls in Robotics” initiative
Their mission is simple: help younger students see that engineering and robotics are exciting, creative, and accessible to everyone.
Why This Matters
Behind every late-night build session and competition milestone was the constant support of their coach, Susee. More than just guiding the team technically, Susee created a space where students could experiment, learn from failures, and grow together. From opening up her home for meetings to encouraging the team through stressful competition prep, her support became a big part of the BeaverBots journey. The confidence, teamwork, and passion the students carried to Worlds reflected not just their hard work, but also the environment he helped build around them.
